The following day I phoned the farmer and introduced myself. The farmer said, ‘It’s a natural remedy that will definitely help him.’ Intrigued, I asked him to share his secret, and he said, ‘It is good old-fashioned cow manure with added medicinal herbs. You need to warm it up and spread it over his knee to make a hot poultice, it stinks a bit but if you can stand the smell it will speed up the healing process.’ I was shocked and had visions of one of the best players in the world laying on the treatment table with a lump of cow shit on his knee, then Terry walking in saying, ‘What is that smell?’

The farmer meant well so I decided to let him down gently. ‘What breed of cows have you got?’ I asked. ‘Guernsey,’ he replied. ‘That’s a shame, because Paul is a northerner, we are only allowed to use Aberdeen Angus I’m afraid but thank you very much for your help.’ I had a little chuckle as I put down the phone. A few days later Terry asked if I had called the farmer so I replied, ‘I did, Terry, but unfortunately it was a load of old crap!’
